Night Flight was one of the first places to see films and shorts not generally aired on broadcast television or on the pay-per movie channels such as HBO. It was the first place many Americans were able to see music documentaries like Another State of Mind, The Grateful Dead Movie, Word, Sound and Power, and—Yessongs. Night Flight was also one of the first American television shows to display the music video as an art form, rather than purely as a promotional tool for the artists. And, with the freedom had by them on early (and late-night) cable television, they would at times show portions of videos that were censored (or in some cases, banned) by MTV and other outlets.

If I wrote book on why things were better before the internet, I’d have a chapter that broke down how great it was to stay up late at sleepovers to watch Night Flight. Because it was.

I’d also have a chapter on how John Coltrane wasn’t on twitter.

This is ship from the original Battlestar Galatica series. It’s [apparently] a Cylon Raider. My neighbor kid buddy Mikey had one of these and I always really liked it.

One day we worked out a trade whereby I would give him my Batman record - like an LP that had several cool Batman stories on it (books on record?!) - and he would give me the spaceship. I loved the record, but I had memorized the stories long ago. It was a deal.

Two days later - presumably after he listened to the stories a few times - he demanded a trade back. I said no. Parents got involved. Of course then we had to trade back.

I haven’t really liked sci-fi since. That was fine, tho, because then it didn’t hurt as much when Hollywood ruined ‘Starship Troopers’.

Here’s the neighborhood gang after finishing the Chequamegon last weekend. Some of us rode the short, some of us rode the long, all of us stuffed our faces with donut holes and beer when it was over. Fun times for sure, but next time I’m leaving the rigid fork at home. Whooowee bumpy!

Oh man they’re running a Celebrity Jeopardy tournament and the first episode aired last week and I just watched it tonight and it was Andy Richter, Dana Delany, and Wolf Blitzer and it ruled. The pic above shows the final scores (pre-final Jeopardy). You’ll note that Andy just wrecked Wolf and Dana. You’ll also note Wolf didn’t even stay in the positive. It was an embarrassing day for Blitzernation. Howwwwwwllllllllllouch!

I think they’re running one episode a month for 9 months, then having a final or something. Set your tivo accordingly.

Last weekend I went to a corn feed up north. This dude was cooking the corn in a 55 gallon barrel split down the middle. His shirt was dirty. The corn was fantastic. And free. Check out this song. It’s a kids song by Gustafer Yellowgold called ‘Panther Stamps Pants’ and I’ve had it stuck in my head FOREVER and here’s the part where I say that of all the kids songs that could get stuck in your head, this one totally isn’t that bad. It’s almost like if the Beatles made a kids record.

Also: the CD comes with a movie that sorta takes place in Minnesota. Nice!
